It seems like most people take our vision for granted. Hence, we take the ability to drive, read, write and many other tasks for granted.
Unfortunately, simply seeing is a struggle for many people. Specifically, over 285 million people around the world have vision problems, reports the according to the World Health Organization (WHO).
Cataracts account for a third of these vision problems. As reported by the National Eye Institute, over half of all Americans will have cataracts or cataract surgery by the time they are 80. In most low-income and middle-income countries cataracts are the major cause of blindness.
A WELCOME SIGHT
Amazingly, cataracts may be the thing of the past in near future. Even better, it may be possible to see three times better than 20/20 vision, without even wearing glasses or contacts.
What does having three times better vision mean exactly? Well, if you can now read a text that is ten feet away, you would be able to read it from thirty feet away. As for those who are currently unable to see properly, may be able to see much better than the average person. It sounds great, doesn’t it?
This amazing product is developed by the Ocumetics Bionic Lens. We are talking about dynamic lens which are designed to replace a person`s natural eye lens. It is place in the eye with the help of a saline-filled syringe, after which it penetrates in the eye within ten seconds. One there, the lens restore clear vision at all distances without any problems.
While this seems painful, the optometrist who invented the Ocumetics Bionic Lens, says that the procedure is identical to cataract surgery and would take as little as eight minutes. He explains that those who have the specialized lenses surgically inserted would never get cataracts!
“We have developed the Bionic lens to, in its default mode, make our lives function better in their normal realm and in its augmented capacity to allow for us to integrate seamlessly with the entire digital world. […] My humble perception is, that us human beings will be the center of artificial intelligence activity. So, I believe that we are going to filter and chaperon artificial intelligence that will be either around our head, or on our watch, or maybe both. So, it is, if you will, augmenting the human beyond what we normally anticipate,” he adds.
The Bionic Lens may sound too good to be true, but it’s not. It is actually the ultimate result of many years of research and more than a little funding. If everything goes according to plan, the lens could be in doctor`s hands in about two years.
