5 Of The World’s Most Powerful Antibiotics That Don’t Require A Prescription

5 Of The World’s Most Powerful Antibiotics That Don’t Require A Prescription

Ever since antibiotics were first discovered in the mid 19th century, they have been saving people in many ways.  However, their excessive use has now become a problem, as the bugs are not responding to them anymore, creating antibiotic resistance.  Some of those superbugs include Streptococcus pneumonia, fluconazole-resistant Candida ,  (methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus),  and Clostridium difficile. As a matter of fact, nearly 2 million people annually are infected with antibiotic-resistant bacteria in the U.S alone, out of which 23,000 die because of the infection.

Given that antibiotics are now overprescribed, particularly for conditions like flu, cold, chest congestion, and earache,  it`s high time we turned to alternative medicine and natural antibiotics.

5 of The World’s Most Powerful Antibiotics That Don’t Require A Prescription

1. Raw Honey

Raw honey is an excellent source of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, enzymes, and antimicrobial properties.  It also contains propolis and bee pollen, both of which boost immunity and provide antibiotic properties.

Honey has a wide plethora of uses, from reducing coughs and healing foot ulcers in diabetics to reducing postoperative complications and relieving pain better than acetaminophen and commonly used pain-relievers.

Due to its hydrogen peroxide content, raw honey is effective against MRSA as well,  a fact which is backed up by science. It has been found that Manuka honey from New Zealand is the most effective against MRSA, due to its high methylglyoxal content.

“…clinical trials have found that Manuka honey is effective against more than 250 strains of bacteria, including:

  • MRSA (methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus)
    • MSSA (methicillin-sensitive Staphylococcus aureus)
    • VRE (vancomycin-resistant enterococci)
    • Helicobacter Pylori (which can cause stomach ulcers)”

2. Oregano Oil

Oregano oil is extremely beneficial during cold and flu season, due to its potent antioxidant, antimicrobial, antiviral, and antifungal properties.  It works as sanitizer around the house or at school, because of its activity against the ‘winter stomach bug’.  It has been scientifically shown that oil of oregano is effective against different parasites in the human digestive tract, too.

To prevent cold and flu, you should take 1,500 mg capsule on a daily basis while for acute conditions you should take 3,500 mg capsules a day in divided doses.  To relieve infection and sinus congestion, it is recommended to add a few drops of oregano oil to a steam. Ultimately,  mixing a few drops of oregano oil with a teaspoon of carrier oil like almond or coconut oil and applying it to athlete`s foot or ringworm accelerates the healing process.

3. Coconut Oil

Coconut oil has become all the rage over the past few years, and its natural antibiotic properties are only one of the many reasons to love it!  Coconut oil possesses potent antimicrobial, antifungal, and anti-parasitic properties, all of which are attributed to its lauric acid, caprylic acid, and capric acid content. This oil is especially effective against skin infections, atopic dermatitis, and Staphylococcus aureus.

4. Garlic

Garlic provides numerous benefits as a natural antibiotic, such as combating fungal and microbial infections. According to a 90-day study of Aged Garlic Extract (AGE),  treating cold and flu with garlic reduces its severity as well as the number of symptoms.

Before use, cut the garlic and let it sit for about 15 minutes to release allicin, one of its active compounds.  Then, add garlic in the last 5 minutes of cooking in order to keep its active compounds which are sensitive to heat.

5. Echinacea

This herb has been long used to neutralize venom from snakebites, due to its antiviral, antibacterial, and antiseptic properties. It contains polysaccharides which active immune response, providing an immune boost and anti-inflammatory effect.

Note:  Echinacea is not recommended to be used as preventative measure against cold and flu.  The best would be to use it for treating symptoms associated with upper respiratory infection, if any.

Drinking Apple Cider Vinegar Before Bedtime Will Change Your Life For Good!

Drinking Apple Cider Vinegar Before Bedtime Will Change Your Life For Good!

Most people use apple cider vinegar in recipes like pickles, salad dressings, or pies and a few of them know that it can be also enjoyed as healthy beverage.

As unbelievable as it seems, drinking apple cider vinegar before going to bed provides a wide plethora of health benefits and improves your overall health.  This article covers the top 10 benefits of drinking apple cider vinegar before bedtime. Check them out!

1. WEIGHT LOSS

Many studies show that there is a strong link between obesity and sleep deprivation. As a matter of fact, the more weight a person has, the more sleep issues will experience.

Apple cider vinegar contains pectin, a compound which provides a sense of feeling full, reduces the appetite, and prevents fat buildup.   Therefore, in case you experience unhealthy cravings at night, mix a teaspoon of apple cider vinegar with a cup of water instead of reaching for something sweet.

In addition to this, people consuming ACV before bedtime had reduced insulin spikes and felt much fuller, as reported by “European Journal of Clinical Nutrition.”

2. LOWERS BLOOD SUGAR LEVELS

Apple cider vinegar increases insulin sensitivity, which in turn lowers blood sugar levels in the body.  To keep your blood sugar levels in check, take two teaspoons of apple cider vinegar before bedtime on a regular basis.

3. PREVENTS INDIGESTION

It has been shown that insomnia and indigestion often go hand in hand, which makes apple cider vinegar a real savior in case one is having sleep issues.   Namely, mixing a teaspoon of apple cider vinegar and a teaspoon of honey in a glass of warm water and drinking it before bedtime prevents indigestion and helps treat nausea and bloating, which in turn also promotes better sleep.

4. SOOTHES STOMACHACHE

A teaspoon of organic ACV diluted in a cup of warm water and drunk before bedtime helps bring relief from the stomachache and discomfort that makes you miserable.  This simple trick eliminates cramps and gas, which may often leave you without a good night`s rest.

5. TREATS ACID REFLUX

What makes apple cider vinegar an effective treatment for acid reflux is its ability to restore acidity in the gut.  Simply mix a tablespoon of ACV with a glass of water and drink it an hour before bedtime. Simple as that!

6. ALLEVIATES NOCTURNAL LEG CRAMPS

Nocturnal leg cramps, which are manifested by sudden pain in the thigh or calf, are often caused by lack of potassium.  Being an excellent source of potassium, apple cider vinegar steps in as both preventative measure and treatment of these cramps.  All you have to do is to dilute two tablespoons of ACV in a glass of warm water and drink it before bedtime.

7. HELPS GET RID OF HICCUPS

Because of its bitter taste, apple cider vinegar triggers the nerves in the throat and mouth which are responsible for hiccups, which in turn ceases their need to hiccup. Simply take a teaspoon of ACV and swallow it.

8. TREATS RUNNY NOSE

Being rich in potassium, magnesium, and vitamins like A, B1, B2, and E, apple cider vinegar helps thin the mucus and clear the sinuses. For a simple and quick relief, mix a teaspoon of ACV with a glass of water and drink it before bedtime.

9. TREATS SORE THROAT

Apple cider vinegar creates acidic environment in which the bacteria responsible for sore throat cannot survive. What`s more, it also acts as potent antibacterial agent.

For a quick relief, take a teaspoon of ACV an hour before bedtime.  Then, take another teaspoon half an hour later, and take the third one right before bedtime.

10. ELIMINATES BAD BREATH

Apple cider vinegar kills off bacteria in the oral cavity which are responsible for bad breath, thus keeping the mouth fresh and nice-smelling.  All you have to do is to take a teaspoon of ACV before going to bed.

Women Need More Sleep Than Men Because Their Brains Work Harder, According To Science

Women Need More Sleep Than Men Because Their Brains Work Harder, According To Science

It has been scientifically shown that women and men have different brains and that the structure of a woman`s brain is more complex.   Therefore, the fact that women need more sleep doesn’t come as surprise.  As reported by Professor Jim Horne, director of the Sleep Research Centre at Loughborough University,

“For women, poor sleep is strongly associated with high levels of psychological distress and greater feelings of hostility, depression, and anger,” and “These feelings were not associated with the same degree of sleep disruption in men.”

Professor Jim Horne is the author of “A Journey Through The Science of Sleep,” book which focuses on the importance of sleeping.  As explained in the book:

“One of the major functions of sleep is to allow the brain to recover and repair itself. During deep sleep, the cortex — the part of the brain responsible for thought memory, language and so on – disengages from the senses and goes into recovery mode.”

“The more of your brain you use during the day, the more of it that needs to recover and, consequently, the more sleep you need. Women tend to multi-task — they do lots at once and are flexible — and so they use more of their actual brain than men do. Because of that, their sleep need is greater.

A man who has a complex job that involves a lot of decision-making and lateral thinking may also need more sleep than the average male — though probably still not as much as a woman.”

“This is because women’s brains are wired differently from men’s and are more complex, so their sleep need will be slightly greater. The average is 20 minutes more, but some women may need slightly more or less than this.”

Women Need More than 8 Hours of Sleep a Night

Although we are constantly being told that getting an 8-hour sleep a night is usually enough for both men and women, Professor Horne refutes these claims, suggesting that women need more sleep because their brain is more complex.

Women are used to multi-tasking and thus expose their brain to more demanding activities. Therefore, it`s natural for their brain to seek more time to recover, and sleeping is the best way to restore, recover, and heal.

Interestingly, men with highly responsible jobs which require decision-making need more sleep than an average male, which is still less when compared to an average woman.

Tips on How to Improve Sleep Quality

1. Stick to a Sleep Schedule

It is recommended to set a sleep routine and stick to it, so that the brain learns when it needs to slow down and relax.  Start going to bed and getting up at the same time and be consistent.  As unbelievable as it seems, sticking to a sleep schedule significantly improve sleep quality.

2. Pay Attention to What You Eat and Drink ( Avoid Stimulating Foods)

Certain foods and drinks, like coffee, sugar, and chocolate, have stimulating effects which affect your sleep and often lead to insomnia.  Therefore, make sure you avoid these foods before bedtime in order to prevent them from disrupting your sleep.

3. Get Comfortable

You need to create an environment for sleeping, which means that you need quiet, dark, and cool room. Turn off any devices like TV and lights and use high quality pillow and mattress.

4. Yoga

Practicing yoga is highly recommended for people with sleep disorders as certain yoga poses prepare the body for a good night`s rest.

5. Reduce Stress/ Try Meditation

Women often have difficulties falling asleep or staying asleep during the night as their brain works at all times and they are more prone to stress.  Insomniacs and anyone with sleep disorder is recommended to practice meditation, which helps the brain settle down and relax.

6. Include Physical Activity in your Daily Routine

Exercising on a regular basis helps fall asleep quicker and enjoy more quality sleep.  However,  pay attention to the timing as exercising before bedtime may have the opposite effect.

7. Melatonin

It has been scientifically shown that melatonin promotes better sleep. Consider taking 1-3 mg of melatonin, an hour before bedtime.

5 Essential Oils That Can Help Reset Your Hormones

5 Essential Oils That Can Help Reset Your Hormones

Herbs offer a wide plethora of healing properties, and their ability to positively affect hormones is one of them.  Thyme, holy basil, clary cage, sandalwood, and myrtle are the five herbs which are of particular interest to hormonal health.

Some of the major hormones in the body include:

  • Adrenal hormones: These are responsible for the production of cortisol, which contributes to metabolism and controls stress.
  • Reproductive hormones: Progesterone and estrogen manage female fertility and menstrual cycle and balance vaginal pH, while testosterone manages bone mass, red blood cell production, and male fertility.
  • Sleep hormones: Sleep hormones like melatonin affect the health when out of balance. Sleep deprivation can wreak havoc to the entire body, making it more prone to burnout and sickness.
  • Thyroid hormones: These are produced by the thyroid and are responsible for metabolism regulation.

5 Hormone Balancing Herbs

1. Thyme: Preventing Breast Cancer

A team of researchers studied the effects of different herb extract on breast cancer cells in an in vitro study.  Thyme was shown to bind to progesterone, a sex hormone which plays role in pregnancy and menstrual cycle.  It has been found that thyme is packed with phytoestrogens and phytoprogestins, which mimic the activity of anti-progesterone drugs and stop the growth of breast cancer cells.

2. Holy Basil: Lowering Anxiety

It has been scientifically shown that basil has the ability to lower the levels of cortisol, the stress hormone. According to one study, holy basil extract lowers anxiety levels safely and quite effectively.  The subject were given holy basil for six weeks and exhibited improvement in various stressful aspects, including exhaustion, sleep quality, memory issues, and sexual problems.

3. Clary Sage: Healthier Menopause

Clary sage is yet another herb with an ability to lower cortisol levels.  In one study the levels of cortisol of women in their 50s notably decreased after they inhaled clary sage oil.  It is worth noting that the hormones that stimulate the thyroid are decreased, but only slightly.  In addition, clary sage might boost estrogen levels in those with menopausal symptoms caused by lack of estrogen.

4. Sandalwood: Reducing Stress

According to one study involving women undergoing a breast biopsy, the combination of orange and peppermint oil was less effective than the combination of sandalwood and lavender, which notably reduced the anxiety during their exam.

Another study has found that cancer patients suffering from sleep deprivation improved their sleep quality by inhaling blends of essential oil. Sandalwood, which was one of the oils included in one of those blends, led to improvement in the sleep pattern in more than 64 percent of the patients.

5. Myrtle: Improving Sleep

Although many cultures use this herb as hypnotic herb or sedative, there have not been any studies on its effects yet.  But, there have been a couple of promising animal studies though. It has been shown that lab animals given myrtle extract were sleeping better and their muscles were much more relaxed.

Another study done on the connection between myrtle and sleep, mice given myrtle essential oils experienced prolonged sleeping during which their brain activity was slowed down.

The Best Ways to Use Herbs Medicinally

Herbs can be used in many different ways! The simplest way to get the most of them is to add them to your food, but they can be also found in extract forms, essential oils, and teas.

Herb-based essential oils can be used in a wide range of ways, too:

  • Add a couple of drops to a hot bath
  • Mix with a carrier oil and massage in the skin
  • Use a diffuser: Add a couple of drops to distilled water and place in a common area of the house
Never buy these 12 fruits and veggies unless they’re organic – they’re probably filled with pesticides!

Never buy these 12 fruits and veggies unless they’re organic – they’re probably filled with pesticides!

If you add strawberries to your smoothie or eat them as a quick snack, make sure they are organic. An Environmental Working Group analysis of 48 fruits and veggies has shown that strawberries are the most contaminated with pesticides.  They even beat out apples and staggering 98% of the samples contained as least one pesticide residue.

You are probably taken aback by the fact that conventionally grown produce may be filled with pesticides, but there are many variances in the levels of different crops.

Eating Strawberries Could Expose You to Dozens of Pesticides

The average Americans eats about eight pounds of strawberries annually, “and with them, dozens of pesticides, including chemicals that have been linked to cancer and reproductive damage or are banned in Europe,” EWG’s Bill Walker and Sonya Lunder said.

EWG used data from the USDAA, which found that strawberries tested in 2009 and 2014 contained 6 different pesticides per sample compared to less than two per sample for other produce.

According to California data, up to 300 pounds of pesticides were applied to each acre of strawberries, which makes these crops pesticide-intensive.

Hormone-Disrupting, Potentially Cancer-Causing Pesticides Used on Strawberries

According to the EWG, these are the pesticides used on strawberries:

  • Carbendazim, a hormone-disrupting fungicide which is banned in the European Union
  • Bifenthrin, an insecticide classified as potential human carcinogen by California regulators
  • Malathion, a nervous system toxin  classified as human carcinogen by the International Agency for Cancer Research

Strawberries are quite easy to grow and they come back each year as they are perennials.  In addition, when you grow them on your own, you get your own summer treat. As noted by EWG,

“Fresh strawberries once were a seasonal treat, available in limited supply only for a few spring and summer months.

In recent decades the increased use of pesticides and other chemically-aided growing methods have made cheap strawberries available year round, and aggressive marketing campaigns have spurred consumption.”

The Dirty Dozen and Clean 15: Most and Least Pesticide-Contaminated Fruits and Vegetables

EWG’s 2016 “Dirty Dozen” list for most pesticide-contaminated fruits and veggies resembles last year`s list, except for the strawberries beating out apples.  Their analysis combines 6 measures of contamination to emerge with a score for each type of produce. Here are the results:

EWG’s 2016 Dirty Dozen (Buy These Organic)

  1. Strawberries
  2. Apples
  3. Nectarines
  4. Peaches
  5. Celery
  6. Grapes
  7. Cherries
  8. Spinach
  9. Tomatoes
  10. Sweet bell peppers
  11. Cherry tomatoes
  12. Cucumbers

EWG’s 2015 Clean 15 (OK to Buy These Conventional)

  1. Avocados
  2. Sweet corn
  3. Pineapples
  4. Grapefruit
  5. Cabbage
  6. Sweet peas (frozen)
  7. Onions
  8. Asparagus
  9. Cantaloupe
  10. Papayas
  11. Kiwifruit
  12. Mangos
  13. Eggplant
  14. Cauliflower
  15. Honeydew melon

U.S. Pesticide Tolerance Limits Are Too Lenient

Most of the tested samples fell within the limits for pesticides residues. For example, only 5 samples surpassed the tolerance level set by the EPA.

Sadly, only because pesticide levels fall below this level doesn’t guarantee they are safe. As noted by EWG,

“Some liken pesticide tolerances to a 500 m.p.h. speed limit. If the rules of the road are so loose that it’s impossible to violate them, then nobody can feel safe.”

For example, there isn’t any limit on the number of different pesticides allowed on food products. The effects of these chemicals are still unclear, but the concern is justified.

The tolerance levels fail to take into consideration recent studies showing those chemicals to be toxic at low levels. In CHAMACOS Study, children born in an angricultural mecca in California were studied through age 12 to analyze the effect the pesticides had on their development. Mother`s exposure to organophosphate was linked to:

  • Lower IQ and poorer cognitive functioning in children
  • Shorter duration of pregnancy
  • Poorer neonatal reflexes
  • Increased risk of attention problems in children

Glyphosate Residues Are Still a Mystery

Gluphosate is the most commonly used agricultural chemical. The problem is that it is not known how much of it may be used in food as the USDA doesn’t test for it. In February 2016 the FDA has announced that it might start testing foods for this chemical.

For now an analysis by the organizations Sustainable Pulse and Moms Across America suggested that eating non-organic,  GE foods is linked to higher glyphosate levels in the body. As explained by the Detox Project,

“Glyphosate levels have been found to be significantly higher in urine of humans who ate non-organic food, compared with those who ate mostly organic food. Chronically ill people showed significantly higher glyphosate residues in their urine than healthy people.

In a separate detailed analysis, glyphosate was found in the urine of cows, humans, and rabbits. Cows kept in a GM-free area had significantly lower glyphosate concentrations in urine than cows in conventional livestock systems.”

Eating Organic Lowers Pesticide Levels in Your Body

According to data from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC),  over 75% of Americans has pretty much high levels of organophosphate pesticides in their urine.  The best way to lower this burden is to eat organic. A study done on this subject has found that people who ate organic food had about 65% lower risk of pesticide residues.

The study also found that organic produce had 180 times lower pesticide content compared to conventional produce. Eating veggies, even non-organic, is far better than not eating veggies at all. But, check out the Dirty Dozen list and look for organic produce as much as possible. In case you cannot find organic produce, look for local farmer who has his pesticide use eliminated.

Top 10 Health Benefits of Lemon Water

Drinking lemon water in the morning is recommended by many experts, and for a very good reason! Namely, lemon water is highly nutritious drink with a wide range of health benefits.

Lemon water is a great way to start the day as it provides proper hydration to the body and helps eliminate dangerous toxic waste from the system.  As for its nutritional profile, it is an excellent source of minerals like potassium, iron, and calcium; vitamins like A, B, and C, as well as protein, fiber, and carbohydrates.

In addition, lemon is abundant in citric acid as well as packed with potent immune-boosting, antiviral, and antibacterial properties. To prepare this super-healthy beverage, simply cut the lemon in halves, squeeze the juice into a glass of warm water, and sweeten with honey, if needed.

Top 10 Health Benefits of Lemon Water

1. Eliminates Bad Breath

Due to lemon`s acidic nature, lemon water works as an amazing natural tool against bad breath.  It basically cleanses the mouth and stimulates the production of saliva, which in turn kills off bacteria which are responsible for the bad breath in the first place. What`s more, lemon also removes the white layer formed on the tongue during sleep.

Note:  Citric acid is quite strong and it may damage the tooth enamel. To stay on the safe side, make sure you brush the teeth first and then drink the lemon water.  Another option is to rinse the mouth with pure water after finishing the lemon water.

2. Treats Throat Infections

Thanks to its strong antibacterial properties, lemon water is extremely effective in treating throat infections, sore throat, and tonsillitis.  Simply put, drinking lemon water on a regular basis helps keep throat infections at bay as well as asthma and respiratory-related issues.  To accelerate the healing process, you can gargle with lemon water.

3. Balances pH Levels

What makes lemons one of the best alkalizing foods available is the acidic and ascorbic acid content, which works wonders when it comes to balancing pH levels in the body.  This is extremely important as excessive acidity is already known to have a strong link with inflammation in the body.  Drinking lemon water in the morning reduces both acidity and uric acid in the joints, which in turn reduces inflammation and lowers the risk of inflammation-related diseases.

4. Boosts Energy

Being packed with vitamins B and C as well nutrients like proteins, carbohydrates, and phosphorus, lemon works as ideal energy-booster.  At the same time, it hydrates, oxygenates, and revitalizes the body, allowing you to jump start your morning routine.  Once it enters the digestive system, lemon gives an instant energy boost, while improving your mood at the same time.

5. Boosts Immunity

Lemons boost by improving the absorption of nutrients which are needed for the health of our immune system.  They also supply the body with vitamin C, which prevents flu, colds, and protects the system for different ailments.  Ultimately, lemons contain saponins, compounds with potent antimicrobial properties.

6. Promotes Weight Loss

If you`ve been looking for an all-natural way to boost your weight loss process, look no further! Lemon water could be your perfect weight-loss tool due to the pectin content which stops cravings and provides a feeling of satiety which lasts for an extended period of time. What`s more,  the ingredients included in lemon water are alkaline,  which helps accelerate the weight loss process.

7. Regulates Blood Pressure

People with hypertension will benefit a lot from drinking lemon water as it cleanses the lymphatic system while hydrating the entire body.  Additionally, lemons are high in potassium, a mineral which combats stress, improves mental function, aids sleep, and thus keep blood pressure in check.

8. Improves Digestion

Lemon contains compounds which stimulate the production of bile, which has a key role in digestion.  Being effective in removing toxic waste and detrimental compounds, lemons also boost the function of the digestive tract.

In other words, drinking lemon water on a regular basis helps prevent and treat symptoms of indigestion, including belching, heartburn, bloating, diarrhea, and constipation.

9. Cleanses the Urinary Tract

Lemon water works as a natural diuretic, ably cleansing the urinary tract and stimulating the urine production.  It also balances the pH level of the urinary tract, which in turn lowers the proliferation of bacteria.  Citric acid content detoxifies the entire body and keeps urinary tract- related infections at bay.

10. Improves Skin Quality

Given that it purifies the blood and encourages the growth of new blood cells, lemon water significantly improves skin`s quality.  Its vitamin C and antioxidant content prevents the appearance of skin spots, blemishes, and wrinkles, while combating damage caused by free radicals. Adding honey to lemon water enhances its effects, particularly its anti-bacterial, restorative, and collagen-boosting properties.

Each Tooth Is Associated With An Organ In The Body – Pain In Each Tooth Can Predict Problems In Certain Organs!

Each Tooth Is Associated With An Organ In The Body – Pain In Each Tooth Can Predict Problems In Certain Organs!

Did you know that even the tiniest tooth problem can be a sign of certain internal issue? As unbelievable as it sounds, there is a strong link between the state of your teeth and the state of your internal organs.  If you find this information appealing and helpful enough, read on for more in-depth information on the topic!

For instance, the upper and lower incisors are associated with the kidneys, bladder, and ears while canine teeth are linked to the state of your liver and gallbladder.  As explained by the experts, the premolars reflect the state of the lung and color, the molars tell a lot about the state of the stomach, spleen, and the pancreas, and ultimately, the wisdom teeth are associated with the heart and the small intestine.

However, this doesn’t mean that all internal damages are accompanied by damage of the teeth. In many cases, the patients feels discomfort and slight pain in the areas surrounding a healthy tooth while sometimes the pain may be felt in areas where the tooth has been long been removed.

The pain felt in such instances is called phantom pain and it results from the messages the affected organ sends to the corresponding tooth.  If you are familiar with this connection, you will be able to root out the diseased organ easily.

Check out the list below and see if you can make or draw any correlations:
  • Pain in the upper and lower incisor is typically a sign of cystitis, otitis, or pyelonephritis
  • Pain in the first incisor signals tonsillitis or prostatitis
  • If you are experiencing chronic pain in the canine teeth, it might be cholecystitis or hepatitis
  • In case of pain in the premolar teeth, the cause may be colitis, allergic reaction, pneumonia, or dysbactriosis
  • If you have pain in the fourth teeth (top and bottom), you probably have problems like knee pain, elbow pain, shoulder pain, colon disease, or inflammatory-related diseases like arthritis
  • As for pain in the molars, the reasons may be gastric ulcer, chronic pancreatitis, duodenal ulcer, anemia, chronic gastritis
  • Pain in the sixth lower teeth typically signs vein-related problems, atherosclerosis, and problems with the arteries
  • Pain in the sixth upper teeth is often associated with inflammation of the ovaries, spleen, and thyroid gland, sinusitis and pharynx diseases
  • If you are struck with pain in the lower molars, it`s very likely that you are suffering from varicose veins, polyps in the colon, or lung-related problems like bronchial asthma, pneumonia, and bronchitis
  • Wisdom teeth pain is quite troublesome as these teeth are related with cardiac diseases, congenital defect and coronary heart disease
5 herbs that anyone with high blood pressure needs to know about

5 herbs that anyone with high blood pressure needs to know about

The prevalence of hypertension, also known as high blood pressure, is constantly on the rise all across the world.  In the U.S alone, it currently affects 70 million adult, which is one in every three adults.  It is also worth mentioning that about a third of American citizens have prehypertension, a condition which is characterized by high blood pressure, but not yet HBP. This disease costs the USA $46 billion annually, including the cost of medications, treatment, and health care services.

What is High Blood Pressure?

High blood pressure is a term referring to an increased pressure of blood in the arteries, which may be caused by two major factors:

  • The heart pumps blood too forcefully
  • The body`s smaller blood vessels became narrow, which causes the blood to exert more pressure

Blood pressure is measured by the amount of force that the heart pumps through the body.  The pressure can be measured by the amount of force used, the volume of the pumped blood, and the size and flexibility of the arteries.

Causes of High Blood Pressure

Primary Hypertension is the most prevalent type of HBP. It is believed that genetic factors have a critical role in this condition, including genes that cause abnormalities of the sympathetic nervous system and those affecting blood pressure control.

Secondary Hypertension is typically caused by an underlying medical condition or factors like medications.  Among them are:

  • Birth defect in the aorta, (the main artery of the heart)
  • Endocrine disorders
  • Diabetes type 1 and 2
  • Kidney disease
  • Birth control pills
  • Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), including ibuprofen (generic, Advil, Motrin), naproxen (generic, Aleve), and Aspirin
  • Corticosteroids

Risk Factors

  • Men over 45 and women over 55
  • Obstructive Sleep Apnea
  • Obesity
  • Family history
  • Chronic alcohol use
  • Chronic stress
  • Physical inactivity
  • Smoking

The Harm in Pharmaceutical Treatment

There are various options for drug treatments for hypertension, including  beta blockers,  calcium channel blockers (CCBs), diuretics, angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE),  and Angiotensin-receptor blockers (ARB). The problem with these drugs is almost all of them cause the patient to feel even worse that the disease itself has caused him to feel in the first place.

Diuretics

Treatment:  These drugs help the kidneys flush out excess salt and water in the body and are usually the first treatment prescribed in case of hypertension.

Medication brands:

  1. Thiazide diuretics – hydrochlorothiazide (HydroDiuril), chlorothiazide (Diuril), chlorthalidone (Thalitone, Clorpres), methyclothiazide (Enduran), indapamide (Lozol), bendroflumethiazide (Naturetin), and metolazone (Zaroxolyn)
  2. Potassium-sparing diuretics – spironolactone (Aldactone, generic), amiloride (Midamor, generic), and triamterene (Dyrenium, generic)
  3. Loop diuretics – bumetanide (Bumex, generic), ethacrynic acid (Edecrin, generic), furosemide (Lasix, generic), and torsemide (Demadex, generic)

Complications:

Thiazide diuretics may lower body`s supply of potassium, which in turn increases the risk for heart rhythm disturbances. They are also associated with elevated uric acid levels, erectile dysfunction, and elevated blood sugar levels.

Side effects:

  • Urinary incontinence
  • Reduced sexual drive
  • Fatigue
  • Depression and irritability

Beta Blockers

Treatment: Beta blockers slow the heart rate and lower blood pressure levels.

Medication brands: Propranolol (Inderal), acebutolol (Sectral), atenolol (Tenormin), metoprolol (Lopressor), betaxolol (Kerlone), carteolol (Cartrol), nadolol (Corgard), timolol (Blocadren), penbutolol (Levatol), pindolol (Visken), carvedilol (Coreg), and nebivolol (Bystolic).

Complications:

  • They may narrow bronchial airways, which makes the drug inappropriate for those with chronic bronchitis, asthma, or emphysema
  • They increase the risk for diabetes when combined with a diuretic
  • Sudden withdrawals may increase heart rate and blood pressure which can cause angina or a heart attack

Side effects:

  • Dizziness and lightheadedness
  • Reduced exercising abilities
  • Coldness in extremities (legs, arms, toes, and hands)
  • Reduced sexual drive
  • Fatigue and lethargy
  • Vivid dreams and nightmares
  • Depression
  • Memory loss

Angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE)

Treatment: These drugs widen the blood vessels and reduce the overall workload of the heart, thus treating high blood pressure.

Medication brands: captopril (Capoten, generic), quinapril (Accupril, generic), enalapril (Vasotec, generic), perindopril (Aceon, generic), benazepril (Lotensin, generic), ramipril (Altace, generic), and lisinopril (Prinivil, Zestril, generic).

Side effects:

  • Irritating cough
  • Unfit for pregnancy
  • Low blood pressure

 Angiotensin-receptor blockers (ARBs)

Treatment: Just like ACE, ARBs also widen blood vessels and lower blood pressure.

Medication brands: Losartan (Cozaar, Hyzaar, generic), candesartan (Atacand), telmisartan (Micardis), olmesartan (Benicar), valsartan (Diovan), eprosartan (Teveten), irbesartan (Avapro), and azilsartan (Edarbi).

Side effects:

  • Raised potassium levels
  • Drowsiness
  • Low blood pressure
  • Nasal congestion
  • Dizziness
  • Unfit for pregnancy

Calcium-channel blockers (CCBs)

Treatment: CCBs helps relax the blood vessels.

Medication brands: Diltiazem (Cardizem, Dilacor), felodipine (Plendil), amlodipine (Norvasc), isradipine (DynaCirc), nicardipine (Cardene), verapamil (Calan, Isoptin, Verelan), nisoldipine (Sular), and nifedipine (Adalat, Procardia).

Side effects:

  • Erectile dysfunction
  • Fatigue
  • Gingivitis
  • Rash
  • Constipation
  • Food interactions

Herbs: The Natural Alternative to Treat High Blood Pressure
