Just over a year ago General Mills introduced a new product into the cereal market for the health-conscious consumers. Cheerios Protein is a spin on their classic Cheerios made with whole grains and lentils. In the beginning, the comments were good. But then, the Huffington Post concluded that these cereals have a taste of a more sweetened and aggressively flavored Cheerios. After that, in November, the Center for Science in the Public Interest sued General Mills. They noted that there was very little extra protein in Cheerios Protein when compared to the original and in addition, there was about 17 times more sugar! The effects of these cereals can be completely opposite from what we see in the ads. Rather that boosting the energy levels, Cheerios protein can cause inflammation, diabetes, and even cancer.
This is a worrying trend between the brands. They are practically lying the consumers about the healthy effects of their products. But compared to the past, brands have much more difficulties to convince the consumers today, because they are more informed than ever. The best way to fight against scams such as these is to eat plant-based, non-GMO foods. Also, it is very important to share these types of info to as many people as possible, because everyone deserves to know the truth.
