Have you ever wondered what happens with water chemistry when you boil it? Well, its chemistry and mineral content change, which is often desirable as it ensures that it`s safe to drink. However, boiling the water for too long or reboiling it drives off volatile compounds and dissolved gasses and this goes to unhealthy lengths, causing undesirable chemicals to end up in your water.Reboiling the water increases the risk for ingesting certain undesirable chemicals, such as arsenic, nitrates, and fluoride.
As said by Julie Harrison from Improve Your Health, “The chemicals in the water get concentrated, things like nitrates, arsenic and fluoride. “Every time you reboil the water, they get more concentrated, and you really don’t want to be having them in your body.”
As mentioned in the very beginning, reboiling the water changes its mineral content too, which means that even the ones which are good for us may become detrimental when concentrated. A good example of this is calcium salt, whose excessive intake may lead to kidney stones and gallstones.
The Destructive Effects of Reboiled Water
As stated by The World Health Organization (WHO),“Drinking-water poses the greatest threat to public health from arsenic.”
Exposing to arsenic is associated with arsenic toxicity, which may eventually trigger physical effects, whose severity depends on the level of exposure.
Some of the major effects linked to arsenic toxicity include skin lesions, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, renal system effects, peripheral neuropathy, gastrointestinal symptoms, and even cancer.
While nitrates are naturally present in the soil, water, and air, they become detrimental when used as a food preservative. This happens because their change their chemical structure when exposed to high heat, such as boiling water.
Namely, when exposed to high temperature nitrates turn into nitrosamines, potent carcinogens which can induce tumour growth in humans.
This chemical has been associated with different types of cancers, including leukemia, esophageal cancer, stomach cancer, colon cancer, bladder cancer, pancreatic cancer, and ovarian cancer.
It has been scientifically shown that fluoride is a serious threat to human health. However, the government insists on keeping it in our drinking water, despite the fact that it is directly linked to a wide range of dangerous effects.
Harvard University gathered data from more than 27 studies done over the last two decades in order to see whether exposure to fluoride really does affect cognitive and neurological function in children. According to the results published in the journal of Environment Health Sciences, fluoride found in drinking water led to lower IQ among children.
A study done three years ago also found that there is a strong link between fluoride exposure and lower infertility rates in male mice.
