Even though it sounds unusual and most guys will be disgusted by this idea, it seems that after all they SHOULD start taking a pregnancy test. It is needless to even say that men won’t use the pregnancy for the same purpose as women (to determine whether they carry baby or not), but there a very important underlying health reason instead.
It all started as a joke, when a man was making fun of his pregnancy test which had two lines. The picture with the positive result was posted on the Internet and the only purpose of the man posting it was to joke around. However, it turned out that there is a serious underlying health condition in question. Some Reedit user advised the man to get tested for testicular cancer, if of course, that was a real photo. Luckily, the man followed this advice and was able to detect and treat the disease during its early stages.
How Come the Possibility to Detect Cancer
The home pregnancy tests are designed to detect a change in hormone in women, which indicates that they are pregnant. However, the moms-to-be are not the only ones who can produce the hormone. Men who have been diagnoses with testicular cancer appear to have the same hormone. This means that this test can help you stay safe from this type of cancer.
The hormone we are talking about is the HGC or human chorionic gonadotropin. This hormone is naturally found in the placenta of women during pregnancy and it can also appear in men with testicular cancer.
What is Testicular Cancer?
As the name itself suggests, this type of cancer develops in the testes or testicles, located inside the scrotum that loses bag of skin under the penis. The main function of the testicles is to produce sex hormones and sperm for males. Luckily, the testicular cancer is not that common, but it can develop in anyone who is 15-35 years old.
Reasons why Men Should Take the Pregnancy Test
- There is no need to book for an appointment with a doctor
- It is painless
- It is very cheap and affordable way to check for testicular cancer
- It allows easier treatment of the cancer during its early stages
Testicular cancer is highly treatable and it can be cured even if the cancer has affected other parts of the body. If detected early, the chance of successful treatment is very high. Then, why not take a pregnancy test? In case it turns out positive, consult your doctor and have checked right away.
According to many experts, even if the pregnancy test is negative, you should still consult a doctor if you suspect that there is something wrong.
So, if you are wondering if all this makes sense or not, consider the fact that many doctors would say that it does! According to Bruni Nazario, MD, WebMD’s resident endocrinologist,
“Yes, this is possible. Testicular cancer makes hormones and one hormone produced is hCG, the same hormone produced by embryonic tissue during pregnancy. This cancer also produces AFP, a fetal protein measured during pregnancy.”
