Eat 2 tbsp of coconut oil twice a day for 60 days and this will happen to your brain

Eat 2 tbsp of coconut oil twice a day for 60 days and this will happen to your brain

According to the Alzheimer`s Association`s 2011 Alzheimer’s Disease Facts and Figures, currently 5.4 million Americans have Alzheimer`s disease.

While an estimate, this number will jump to 16 million by 2050 and in the next years this disease will affect 1 in 4 Americans, which is even more than the rate of obesity and diabetes at the moment.

Given that there are only a few treatments available, most of which are rarely effective, early detection and prevention became extremely important!

It turns out that something as simple as a tablespoon of peanut butter and a ruler could be used to diagnose the disease in its early stages. As reported by Medical News Today:

“Jennifer Stamps, a graduate student in the University of Florida (UF) McKnight Brain Institute Center for Smell and Taste, and her colleagues reported the findings of a small pilot study in the Journal of the Neurological Sciences.

Stamps came up with the idea of using peanut butter to test for smell sensitivity while she was working with Dr. Kenneth Heilman, one of the world’s best known behavioral neurologists, from the UF College of Medicine’s department of neurology.

…The ability to smell is associated with the first cranial nerve and is often one of the first things to be affected in cognitive decline… She thought of peanut butter because, she said, it is a ‘pure odorant’ that is only detected by the olfactory nerve and is easy to access.”

This study tested the ability to smell of 24 patients with mild cognitive impairment. The patient had to close their eyes and mouth and hold one nostril close while breathing through the other. The clinician measured the distance between the open nostril and the peanut butter with the help of a ruler, identifying the distance at which the patient had the ability to detect the smell. The procedure was done with the other nostril after a 90 second delay.

It has been found that patients diagnosed with an early stage of Alzheimer`s disease underwent a notable difference in their ability to detect the smell between the two nostrils. According to the report:

“[T]he left nostril was impaired and did not detect the smell until it was an average of 10 cm closer to the nose than the right nostril had made the detection in patients with Alzheimer’s disease.

This was not the case in patients with other kinds of dementia; instead, these patients had either no differences in odor detection between nostrils or the right nostril was worse at detecting odor than the left one.”

BENEFITS OF COCONUT OIL MAKE HEADLINES AGAIN

Florida researchers are currently investigating whether coconut oil can be beneficial when it comes to this disease. Three years ago, Dr. Mary Newport`s theory suggested that ketone bodies offer benefits in the battle against Alzheimer`s disease.

Presently, this theory is being used to set up the first clinical trial of this kind and the research is being done at USF Health Byrd Alzheimer’s Institute.

For the purpose of this study, 64 patients with mild to moderate Alzheimer`s were included to evaluate the effects of coconut oil on the disease. As reported by CTV News:

“While there is currently no clinical data showing the benefits of coconut oil on the prevention and treatment of dementia, Newport — whose husband Steve was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s at age 51 — said she began to see improvements after starting him on four teaspoons of coconut oil per day.

‘Before the coconut oil, he could not tie his shoes. His weird slow gait… That improved. He walked normally and he was able to start running again.

He was able to start reading again, his conversation improved dramatically and then over several months we saw improvements in his memory,’ Newport said. Prior to starting him on coconut oil, Newport said none of the existing medications were working.”

COCONUT OIL APPEARS TO BE AN IDEAL BRAIN FOOD

Carbs/ sugar and fat are the only types of fuel the body can turn into energy.  Ketones are produced by the body during the conversion of fat into energy.  The major source of ketone bodies are the medium-chain triglycerides, found in coconut oil.

These triglycerides are fats which are not processed by the body in the same way as long-chain triglycerides.  Typically, a fat taken into the body must be mixed with the bile before it can be broken down into the digestive system.

On the other hand, medium-chain triglycerides go straight to the liver, which turns the oil into ketones, which are immediately released into the bloodstream and then transported to the brain.

Even though the body loves glucose and is happy running in this type of primary fuel, it has been found that ketone bodies help restore neurons and nerve function in the body. The mechanism of this MCT-ketone metabolism appears to be that the body treats MCTs as carbohydrates, allowing the ketone energy to hit the bloodstream without insulin spike which typically occurs when carbs enter the system.

HOW MUCH COCONUT OIL MIGHT YOU NEED?

According to Dr. Newport`s assessments, only two tablespoons of coconut oil, which is 35 ml or seven level teaspoons,  supply the body with 20 grams of MCT, amount which has been found to prevent against degenerative neurological disease and to treat already established case.

Note that not all people tolerate coconut oil the same way, which means that you need to start slowly and work your way to these therapeutic levels. The best would be to start with one teaspoon along with food and then gradually increase the amount until you are able to tolerate four tablespoons.

LOW-FAT CRAZE HAS LIKELY CONTRIBUTED TO DRAMATIC RISE IN ALZHEIMER’S

Dr. David Perlmutter believes that avoiding fat and carbohydrates are the main causes of Alzheimer`s epidemics, which is preventable disease, influenced by lifestyle factors. Dr. Perlmutter`s book provides a strong argument for removing grains from your diet to protect the brain. As Amanda Smith, Medical Director at University of South Florida (USF) Health Byrd Alzheimer’s Institute told CTV News:

“The pharmaceutical industry is in this — of course to make money for their companies, and of course they want to help people theoretically — but at the end of the day it is about dollars and cents, and so money gets invested in things that are new or patentable rather than things that are sitting on the shelf already.”

INTERMITTENT FASTING CAN ALSO INCREASE KETONE PRODUCTION

Intermittent fasting is one of the ways to boost ketone production. It involves timing of meals, allowing the body to enter the fat-burning process. For optimal results, the length of the fast must be at least 16 hours, meaning that you should eat only between the hours of 11 am until 7 pm or noon until 8pm.

The best would be to avoid eating anything for three hours before bedtime and then extend the time before you have breakfast to the point you have skipped breakfast and have the first meal at lunch.

How to Strengthen Your Weak Legs and Make Them Super Strong

How to Strengthen Your Weak Legs and Make Them Super Strong

Many people complain about weak legs, which are associated with less strength.  This problem may arise from different causes, including poor blood circulation, recovery after surgery, arthritis, dehydration, nerve damage, anemia, back pain, nutritional deficiencies, side effects of prescribed medications, etc.

Its severity varies from mild to severe and it can either affect one or both legs.  It is often accompanied with other symptoms, such as prickling or burning sensations, swelling, redness, loss of muscle coordination, body aches, back pain, muscles spasms, impaired balance, and pain or numbness in the lower part of the body.

To strengthen your muscles, you should eat a well-balanced diet, drink adequate fluids, get proper rest, and exercise on a regular basis.  In addition to this, there are certain home treatments which work to strengthen weak legs and prevent further deterioration of the muscle tissue.

10 WAYS TO STRENGTHEN LEG MUSCLES

1. Massage

Proper circulation is of utmost importance as it allows more nutrients to reach the muscles and thus strengthen them. One of the simplest ways to improve circulation is a regular massage, which also relaxes the entire body, reduces inflammation, pain, and swelling, and it also relieves stress.

Massage the legs for about 15 minutes with gentle strokes and using warm mustard, coconut, or olive oil.  Repeat the procedure two times daily.

2. Walking

Since walking firms the leg muscles and improves circulation, it works as an amazing exercise for strengthening the legs.  People with weak leg muscles will benefit a lot from walking for half an hour, 5 days a week.  Apart from regular walking, it is recommended to take part in other activities, such as jogging, trekking, running, or swimming.

3. Leg Strengthening Exercises

There are various exercises which engage the major leg muscles and thus strengthen them.  Some of them include quad press, hamstring strengthening, straight leg raise, lunges, hip abduction side lying, resistance band hamstring curls, resistance bend knee extension, Swiss ball squats,  and heel slide.

Do these exercises a few times daily as long as you don’t feel pain.  Apart from these exercises, Yoga and Tai Chi can be beneficial as well.

4. Enjoy Sunshine

According to a 2002 study published by the American Society for Clinical Nutrition, vitamin D deficiency is directly linked to muscle weakness.  Vitamin D is responsible for the regulation of minerals needed for healthy bones: calcium and phosphorus.   Since the human body doesn’t produce this vitamin on its own, you should expose your legs to morning sunlight more often and eat more vitamin D- rich foods, such as cereal, orange juice, mackerel, fortified milk, salmon, sardines, etc.

5. Drink More Fluids

Dehydration is one of the major causes of muscle cramps and weak legs.  To prevent dehydration, drink enough water during the day and consume water-based fruits and vegetables. In addition, avoid caffeinated drinks and alcohol.  Consult your doctor about raising your fluid intake in case you are suffering from any kidney problem.

6. Blackstrap Molasses

Being rich in iron, potassium, calcium, and B vitamins, blackstrap molasses is highly beneficial when it comes to preventing leg weakness and keeping legs strong.   Iron treats anemia, potassium keeps electrolyte levels in check, calcium supplies the muscles with the needed energy, and B vitamins keep muscles strong and healthy.

Mix a cup of hot milk/ water with a tablespoon of blackstrap molasses and consume the mixture once or twice daily. You can also mix a cup of water, two tablespoons of unfiltered apple cider vinegar, and two tablespoons of blackstrap molasses, to create a solution which is equally effective.

7. Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple cider vinegar is an excellent source of vitamin B, magnesium, potassium, and calcium, all of which are beneficial when it comes to strengthening weak muscles.  Its acetic acid content increases the bioavailability of essential minerals you are ingesting through the food you eat.

Mix a glass of water with 1-2 tablespoons of raw apple cider vinegar, a little bit of raw honey, and some lemon juice. Drink this solution two times daily.

8. Milk

Milk is rich in calcium, protein, and other nutrients which are vital for building muscles, which makes it a good tool for strengthening weak muscles.  Moreover, its electrolyte content keeps you well-hydrated.

It is recommended to drink at least two glasses of low-fat milk daily. For additional strength, boil a glass of low-fat milk with figs, dates, and almonds.

9. Horsetail

Horsetail is high in silica, which improves muscle strength, increases bone density, and helps muscles to contract.  It also increases the absorption and use of calcium in the body, which in turn strengthens both muscles and bones.

To prepare horsetail tea, steep a teaspoon of fresh horsetail in a cup of boiling water.  Strain it and add some honey. This tea should be consumed two or three times daily.  Another solution is to take it in the form of supplement, but make sure you consult your doctor first.

10. Have a Healthy Diet

Having a poor diet negatively affects the body at several levels, among which is weakening the muscles. Nutritional deficiencies disrupt proper circulation and lead to fatigue, weakness, and muscle cramps.

  • Since muscle weakness can be caused by potassium deficiency, boost your potassium intake by eating bananas, sweet potatoes, plums, prune juice, tomato juice, and raisins.
  • To prevent leg weakness, eat more protein as the one found in soy foods, eggs, nuts, and yogurt.
  • To prevent leg numbness and build strong muscles, consume more vitamin B-rich food, such as eggs, bananas, lentils, beans, wheat germs, cheese, yogurt, fish, and fortified cereals.
  • To improve your muscle health, eat magnesium- rich foods like pumpkin seeds, almonds, spinach, sunflower seeds, and lima beans.

Additional Tips:

  • Quit smoking
  • Avoid sitting or standing for an extended period of time
  • Limit the consumption of salt to prevent water retention
  • Avoid foods high in saturated fats
  • Keep the legs raised for some time to improve blood circulation
  • Take daily supplements of coenzyme Q10 and lysine to lower muscle weakness
  • Try acupressure and acupuncture

Cabbage Juice – Remedy for 100 Diseases and Protects Against Colon Cancer

There is a strong link between healthy food and natural remedies. Contrary to popular belief, the cure is not always expensive or out of reach. As a matter of fact, very often the remedy is cheap, simple, and highly accessible.

However, the cure is presented as unapproachable and the sole reason for this is the huge profit that pharmacological industry makes.  This article focuses on the importance of healthy and nutritious food and its ability to restore any condition.  It focuses on cabbage/ cabbage juice, which is abundant in vitamin C and has been used by our ancestors for the treatment of numerous diseases.

Cabbage has a robust nutritional profile! It is high in folate, dietary fiber, antioxidants, vitamins B6 and K, and minerals.  It acts as an antiseptic agent as well, due to sulforaphane and glucosinolates, compounds which promote detoxification of the system and stimulate the enzymes of the digestive system.

It has been found that sulforaphane has anti-cancer properties and according to many studies cruciferous vegetables, including cabbage, are one of the best foods when it comes to fighting colon cancer.

Cabbage has been shown to treat hangovers, arthritis, inflammation, anemia, stomach ulcer, chronic cough as well as liver, breast, ovary, and lung cancer.

Additionally, cabbage boosts the metabolism, prevents the conversion of sugar into fat, relieves constipation, and stimulates healthy weight loss.

Scientists Discover Herb That Fights Dementia And Increases Memory By 75%

Rosemary is a fragrant herb with a unique and pungent smell, which is the reason why it is widely used as a spice when cooking.

Interestingly, it has been found that this herb can also be used for medicinal purposes, specifically for treating dementia and Alzheimer`s disease.

“There’s rosemary, that’s for remembrance: pray, love, remember” (Hamlet: Act 4, Scene 5). Taking this into consideration, it becomes evident that even Shakespeare was aware of the beneficial properties of this rosemary.

It has been scientifically shown that rosemary positively affects memory loss as well as the onset of mental slowing, associated with Alzheimer`s and dementia.

Mark Moss and his colleagues studied the effects of the scent released from rosemary essential oil in the brain.  Amazingly, this study led to some remarkable discoveries.

According to this study, the rosemary scent improved cognitive function, specifically memory retention.  The participants in the study noted improvement in their scores on different recall and visualization tasks by smelling rosemary.

There is yet another study on this topic, showing that rosemary has a positive impact on the treatment of dementia and Alzheimer`s disease.

“All patients showed significant improvement in…. cognitive function on both [tests] after therapy. In particular, patients with Alzheimer’s showed significant improvement in total scores.”

As shown by these two studies, rosemary promises a lot in terms of curing dementia and Alzheimer`s disease.

Simply put, just a whiff of rosemary helps boost the performance of your brain! For more facts about this herb topic and more in-depth information on its benefits, take a look at the following video:

9 Inflammatory Foods You Should NEVER Eat and 9 Foods to REVERSE the Damage

9 Inflammatory Foods You Should NEVER Eat and 9 Foods to REVERSE the Damage

Inflammation is needed for the process of healing and protection in cases of tissue damage, meaning that inflammatory response is completely natural.  What inflammation actually does is indicating that the body is healing and protecting itself.

However, chronic inflammation has been associated with serious conditions like stroke, migraines, dementia, rheumatoid arthritis, cancer, and heart-related diseases.  Cardiovascular diseases are the leading cause of death worldwide, accounting for staggering 30 percent of deaths in the world.

Mounting evidence shows that making certain lifestyle changes helps lower the risk of developing these diseases.  The first step toward protecting yourself from these deadly diseases is to avoid the inflammatory foods below:

9 INFLAMMATORY FOODS

1. Sugars

Excessive sugar intake can have numerous consequences, such as increasing the risk of obesity, inflammation, metabolic syndrome, and type 2 diabetes.  It was also found to cause acne and degrade the teeth.  It is recommended to limit your soda, candies, and pastries intake as well as to start incorporating healthy sugar alternatives in your diet, such as honey, stevia, and blackstrap molasses.  Sugar found in sweets should be avoided at all costs but natural sugars found in fresh and dried fruit are completely safe.

2. Common Cooking Oils

Most cooking oils are high in omega-6 fatty acids but low in omega-3 fatty acids.  Such imbalance triggers inflammatory reactions and may lead to development of the diseases above over time.   The best would be to avoid vegetable oils like sunflower oil, grape seed, cottonseed, corn, and sunflower oils and to choose healthier alternatives like macadamia oil and extra virgin oil.

3. Trans Fats

Trans fats are known to increase bad cholesterol and suppress healthy cholesterol.  Such diet may lead to obesity, insulin resistance, and chronic inflammation, all of which are associated with even more serious diseases.  Trans fats are found in processed goods,  fast food,  foods prepared with hydrogenated oil shortening,  and deep-fried foods.  Therefore, if the label says that partially hydrogenated oil shortening was used in the preparation, toss the product!

4. Dairy Products

While only an estimate, up to 60 percent of people are unable to digest milk.  Taking this into consideration, it`s not surprising that milk causes inflammation.  Some individuals may even experience stomachache, hives, acne, respiratory stress, diarrhea, and constipation.  There are numerous dairy products available and the list of foods containing butter and cheese is endless.  People sensitive to milk are recommended to swap milk for kefir and unsweetened yogurt.

5. Feedlot-Raised Meat

Meats produced by commercial suppliers usually have a diet high in omega-6 fats and low in omega-3 fats.  Therefore, these animals tend to gain extra weight,  mostly through unhealthy and unnatural process involving poor diet and use of artificial supplements.  This doesn’t mean that you should completely eliminate meat from your diet, but at least choose healthier options such as meat from animals fed organic foods and more omega-3 fats.

6. Red Meat and Processed Meat

As reported by researchers at the University of California San Diego School of Medicine,  red meat like lamb and pork contains Neu5Gc, a molecule which isn’t naturally produced by the human body.  In other words, the body is resistant to it and its presence triggers an inflammatory response.  Processed meats are to blame for many cancers in the colon, rectum, lungs, and esophagus. Red meat is less detrimental but it still should be eat in moderation. Healthier alternatives include fish and poultry.

7. Refined Grains

Refined grains are lack vitamin B and fiber and their regular consumption is linked to an increased glycemic index and development of diabetes, coronary disease, and even cancer.  Refined grains are typically found in flour, bread, pasta, pastries, rice, crackers, and chips.  Avoiding them is quite difficult, but it`s possible.  All you have to do is to read the labels carefully or grow your own, which is far better.

8. Artificial Food Additives

MSG, aspartame and other common additives are known to cause inflammatory reactions.  They are found in packaged foods but may find their way in restaurant-served foods, too.  Since they are difficult to avoid, at least enrich your food with anti-inflammatory foods and spices.

9. Alcohol

It has been found that alcohol triggers inflammation and irritation of the liver, voice box, and the esophagus.  Chronic inflammation may lead to tumor growth in the affected areas.  Of course, the best substitute for alcohol is pure water, although natural juices, jasmine green tea, and a cup of ginger tea also do the trick.

9 ANTI-INFLAMMATORY FOODS

1. Fatty Fish

Boiled or baked fatty fish like tuna, salmon, and mackerel are some of the best foods to help fight inflammation.

2. Avocado

Besides being extremely tasty, avocado is one of the best anti-inflammatory foods available.

3. Leafy Greens

Broccoli, kale, and collards boost resistance to inflammation and only a serving or two daily is enough to prevent inflammation.

4. Turmeric

Turmeric has been long used to treat joint swelling, bruises, toothache, and rheumatoid arthritis due to its potent anti-inflammatory properties.

5. Ginger

The anti-inflammatory properties in ginger called gingerols can prevent and treat pain as well as reduce swelling by inhibiting the formation of inflammatory compounds.

6. Walnuts

Only an ounce of walnuts a day is enough to boost your manganese, copper, and omega-3 fats intake as well as to supply your body with the needed antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.

7. Holy Basil

Holy basil is cheap, easily accessible, and extremely potent anti-inflammatory agent!

8. Beets

Besides its anti-inflammatory properties, beets also contain notable amounts of vitamin C.

9. Peppers

Both bell and hot peppers are a good way to boost your resistance to inflammation.  Capsaicin, the active ingredient in peppers, is used to combat swelling and pain.

According to a study done at University of Colorado, 5 percent solution reduces pancreatic cancer and destroys nearly 64 percent of pancreatic tumors.

In addition to its anti-cancer properties,  goya possesses other healing properties, too. It has been found that it also helps treat asthma, hypertension, diabetes, stomach problems, and skin infections.

By incorporating goya into your daily diet you will experience significant improvements in your general condition.  Some of the benefits this plant provides are the following:

The Apple Cider Vinegar Tonic That Quickly Destroys Cold and Flu Bugs

The symptoms of cold and flu are very similar, typically including sneezing, coughing, and muscle pain. The difference between cold and flu is mainly in their duration, the first making you feel bad for a few days while the latter may last up to a week and more.  Runny nose, cough, and congestion are the major symptoms of cold, while flu is typically manifested by sore throat, fever, headache, muscle aches and soreness, congestion, and cough.

The thing that they have in common is that their symptoms blend together to create a real mess!
