DIY Essential Oil Laundry Powder You Can Make In Minutes For Clean Heavenly-Smelling Clothes

Let`s face it! There is nothing better than the heavenly smell of freshly-washed clothes lying out to dry on a clothesline.  In order to have this scent, most people turn to commercial laundry detergents.

The problem with these products is that they are packed with countless chemicals which are detrimental to the human body, even when using them on clothes only.  According to the Environmental Working Group, more than 82 percent of laundry detergents are highly hazardous. So, this is definitely not just your imagination. As a matter of fact, a couple of years ago a team of researchers reported on the highly toxic chemicals in laundry detergents and similar laundry products.  Here are some of them:

1. Fragrance

In order to produce a fragrance, manufacturers use a wide range of chemicals.  Naturally, none of them is listed on the label.

2. Cleaning Agents

Some of these cleaning agents include petroleum distillates (linked to lung damage and cancer),  linear alkyl benzene sulfonates (toxic to the aquatic life and irritating to the skin and eyes), nonlphenol ethoxylate or NPE (toxic to nerves, irritating to skin, potential hormone disruptor), diethanolamine (associated with skin and eye irritation and liver problems),  and many more.

3. Bleach

Bleach is known to irritate the lungs, skin, and eyes as well as to contribute to kidney damage, liver, and respiratory issues.

4. Phosphates & EDTA

These chemicals have been long linked to environmental damage. While most detergents have removed these, they are often utilizing ethylene diamine tetraacetic acid (EDTA) in its place.

5. 1,4-dioxane

This chemical is a by-product of detergent manufacturing and is found in almost detergents.  It is a known carcinogen associated with organ toxicity.

6. Stabilizers

These chemicals, such as ethylene oxide and polyalkylene oxide are associated with dermatitis, lung irritation, and eye damage.

7. Brighteners

Benzoxazolyl, diaminostilbene disulfonate and similar chemicals are highly detrimental to the overall health.

The good news is that you can make your own laundry detergent! This simple DIY recipe calls for only two ingredients which are chemical-free and completely safe to use.

Essential Oil for Laundry

Essential oils are much healthier and safer alternative to laundry detergents. They leave the clothes smelling heavenly after using them. Some of the most popular for their amazing smells include peppermint essential oil, lavender, jasmine, rose, sandalwood, cedarwood, chamomile, and more.

Essential oils are not only famed for their nice scent. As a matter of fact, they offer a wide range of health benefit, antibacterial properties, and potent antifungal effect.

It has been found that peppermint, orange, eucalyptus, and lemongrass oils work against 22 strains of bacteria; palmarosa and aegle are effective against 21 strains of bacteria,  and citronella and geranium oils are effective against 15 strains of bacteria.
