Most of the air fresheners available on the market can be very harmful due to the high content of poisonous chemicals.

Phthalates are just one example of those chemicals. They are esters of phthalic acid which are used as plasticizers, or in other words, phthalates are substances that are added to plastics in order to increase their flexibility, durability, and longevity. These chemicals can be found in almost every air freshener. Phthalates are dangerous because they can cause allergic reactions and even asthma attacks.

Alternatives such as scented candles are also full of harmful chemicals. Most of them contain a high amount of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) such as formaldehyde, which can cause severe damage to the respiratory tract, skin, and eyes. In addition, formaldehyde is also linked to increased risk of leukemia, dementia, and reproductive disorders.

Together with phthalates and formaldehyde, there are another 3000 chemicals that are used to make a pleasant fragrance. Besides air fresheners and scented candles, all those chemicals can also be found in colognes, deodorants, personal hygiene products, cosmetics and cleaning products.
According to a study conducted by the EPA in 1991, numerous chemicals that used in fragrance products (such as acetone, benzaldehyde, benzyl acetate, benzyl alcohol, camphor, ethanol, ethyl acetate, limonene, linalool, methylene chloride) can cause central nervous system disorders, dizziness, nausea, drowsiness, irritation to the mouth, throat, eyes, skin, and lungs, headache, respiratory troubles, and fatigue.
Constant exposure to such hazardous chemicals can even lead to the development of cancer.
But luckily for all of us, there are some safer alternatives that can make our homes smell amazing without using any store-bought air freshener. In this article, we will present you one such alternative.
