Vitamin water is a bottled beverage that is being advertised as something that has to be part of a healthy diet. Most vitamin water brands contain many added vitamins such as vitamins A, B, C, and E as well as minerals like potassium and magnesium. Some of the most popular brands include Vitaminwater (Coca-Cola), Sky water, Activate and Hint Water.

What’s the Problem with Vitamin Water?

The biggest problem about vitamin water is that it actually contains the same amount of sugar like store-bought juices and carbonated soft drinks. So, the vitamin water represents another sugar-rich beverage which continues to increase the epidemic of obesity. In addition, the high sugar content can lead to inflammation is some areas of the brain, which can reduce the ability to memorize things.

What about the “No-Sugar” Versions?

Some brands of vitamin water also have zero-calorie or no-sugar versions of their products. Instead of using cane sugar, the companies sweeten their drinks by adding a combination of a sugar alcohol called erythritol and stevia.  Even though this mix is not technically a sugar, it can cause many health issues such as gas, bloating, diarrhea, headache, and nausea.

So, what’s the Alternative?

If you don’t ingest enough vitamins or minerals in your diet, you can fix the problem by eating whole foods. For instance:

·         You can get Vitamin C from pineapples, papaya, and oranges

·         Or Vitamin B3 from tuna, chicken, and brown rice

·         Or Vitamin B5 from mushrooms, avocado, and sweet potatoes

·         Or Vitamin B6 from salmon, spinach, and bananas

·         Or Magnesium from pumpkin seeds, quinoa, and black beans
