Woman Goes to a Hair Salon and Ends Up Fighting for Her Life!
Getting a haircut or new color will make everything better. In fact, it is often the perfect remedy for tough week or stress. Changing your hairstyle once in a while boosts you confidence and makes you feel gorgeous and sexy. Still, with each visit of the hair salon there is a little tinge of worry that the hair will not come out as planned. While winding up with accidental bangs or having more inches cut off are probably the worst experience most of us had, a woman in California experienced something much worse by her trip to the hair salon.
Elizabeth Smith got hair done in Blowbunny salon in San Francisco and ended up in the emergency room in a nearby hospital. As the doctors explained, she had suffered a stroke. It has been determined that the cause of the stroke was the position of her head in the wash basin. In other words, her neck was hyper-extended which caused a blood clot and eventually a stroke.
“Initially I couldn’t walk at all… it hit both sides of my body but more my left, so I couldn’t move my left arm at all,” Elizabeth said. The photos taken after the accident reveal that she wasn’t even able to form a smile on her face after the stroke.
This condition, known as “beauty parlor stroke syndrome”, is very rare and it occurs when the neck of the client is hyper-extended into a wash basin. When the client is leaning the head back in that position, the blood flow is restricted which results in blood clot and a stroke.
“When a patient is leaning their head back, you could possibly tear or irritate these posterior circulation or have these kind of strokes, ” neurologist Dr. Clifford Segil told CBS Philly.
This 48-year-old woman still suffers from dizziness and loss of vision, although two years have passes since the stroke occurred. The doctors warn that she could die if she ever suffers a second stroke.
How to Lower Your Risk for “Beauty Parlor Stroke Syndrome”?
- Ask the stylist to put a towel under your neck to prop the head up
- Keep the neck titled at no more than a 20-degree angle
- You can also get your hair washed by facing the wash basin and flipping the hair forward
